I have a confession, not only do I really like the Decemberists previous CD, “The Crane Wife”, but I heard Jim and Greg give “The Hazards Of Love” a very good review. My review may be biased. That said it is fun to be excited about listening to new music and I was extremely excited to listen to “The Hazards Of Love”.

“The Hazards Of Love” begins with the eerie churchlike “Prelude” that sets the stage to what is about to come. The story being told, and I could be wrong, is about someone named Margaret who gets kidnapped by the Rake and eventually dies in her true loves arms. There is more of course, a jealous Queen, a shape-shifter, and a couple of people die.

What holds this CD together is the music. I hear echoes of Pink Floyd (“Bower Song” and “Abduction of Margaret” in particular), Led Zeppelin (“Hazards Of Love 1”), and Death Cap for Cutie (“The Wanting Comes in Waves” and “The Rake’s Song”), all of whom I like. The Decemberists use a medley of instruments to create their sound.

I enjoyed and will listen to this CD again. On the Tina/Charlie Promote It, Lend It, Deny It, I give “The Hazards Of Love” a Promote It.

As with his previous books, Outliers pulls the reader in with a radically new way to look at what is seemingly obvious and turns it inside out. Talent is not a gift from god but something that is developed with practice.
