My Own Odyssey: Ulysses (Nestor/Proteus)
I read up to page 50, my take so far:
Dedalus is teaching History, he helps a student with his math after class, and he collects his money from his anti-Semite head master.
The style changes to stream of consciousness as he goes home and mulls over stuff, lots of stuff, from family to his mother's death.
I am following everything ok so far. That last bit got tricky.

I got anxious that I was getting too far behind so I got it on my Kindle. Bad thing is I don't know what page I'm on. Good thing is that it has some of the references defined i.e. the greek character references. You might know them with your boy's interest in mythology. I would also like an English (British dictionary) since I don't know some of the words much less the references. I have gotten to the school part. Some one told me that the Bloombury reference book was a good aid.
Isn't that human nature for the literary community to rate this as the 'Best Book'. Computer guys love to do this too with these really academic algorithms and programming languages.

Sometimes something changes how we look at things. Kurt Vonegut's Breakfast of Champions changed how I looked at a novel. Maybe Ulysses is similar.
I have started the book and I find it challenging. I can follow some of his “stream of consciousness” passages better than others.
I did not realize he was reflecting on his mother's death after meeting with the anti-semitic headmaster. I have been reading it before going to bed which is not helpful. Reading these posts is helpful. I am going to start reading earlier in the evening.

Just keep plugging along. It is like watching an English film, you start to understand more and more as the film goes on.
